Joey & Anissa had been here twice pre-kids and fell in love with the history & intrigue of this place! The fact that it's soo hard to get it adds to the specialness! (
We ate our lunch by the broken down mill next to the stram that runs through town.
The National Park Serivce is working on renovating the buildings that they can and at least stabilizing the ones they can't. We've seen a ton of improvements since we were here 15 years ago....at that point it was basically an abandoned ghost town, but now there is a coffee/snack shop, Nat Park center with gifts shop, etc.
Note the glacial moraine in the background. The Kennicott Glacier used to run alongside the mine and stand so tall above the buildings that it blocked the mountains on the other side!!! Now it's receded so far you can barely see it past the edge of town:
